The capture was part of a joint project: the City of Goslar, Goslar Marketing GmbH and the Rammelsberg mining museum commissioned 360-degree models of three significant sites — besides the Imperial Palace, parts of the Rammelsberg visitor mine and the Odeon theatre. The initiative came from the city’s digitalization working group.
What makes it interesting is less what visitors can already see. The appeal lies in the areas beyond: the imposing roof structure of the Imperial Palace is closed to the public, yet can be entered inside the tour. Add the dollhouse view, which presents the whole building like a cut-open doll’s house — a perspective nobody can take on site.
The capture used a 3D scanner on a tripod that rotates on its own axis, produces high-resolution HDR imagery and records room geometry with infrared. The tripod is moved every two metres; in a building this size that adds up to several days.
