The collection
The museum in the Goslarer Zwinger sits behind the massive walls of a defensive tower built in 1517 and houses a collection on the history of arms and justice. How the tower came about and what it was for is covered on the Goslarer Zwinger page; this 3D tour leads through the exhibition rooms.
The exhibits span several centuries: mail shirts and plate armour, two-handed swords and pole arms, muskets and rifles, as well as weapons from the time of the Peasants’ War of 1525 and the Thirty Years’ War. Alongside them are 19th-century cavalry cuirasses, Japanese samurai helmets from the 17th to 19th centuries and edged weapons from Asia and Africa.
Another theme is punishment in earlier centuries, documented with instruments of torture and shame masks. The museum is no longer open to the public, but the collection itself has been kept intact.
