History
The Heimatmuseum Vienenburg, a local history museum, tells the story of what is now a district of Goslar. Across some 100 square metres on two floors, it focuses on trade, crafts and local industry. The museum opened in February 2001 and is looked after by the Heimatmuseumsverein Vienenburg, a local history society. A 3D tour allows a virtual visit.
The ground floor features a wheelwright’s workshop, a bakery with its salesroom, a traditional corner shop and an old Vienenburg cinema, among other things. Display cases and panels recall the Buchholz foundry, a dairy, a cobbler’s and the sugar factory; the upper floor hosts changing exhibitions.
The museum also remembers potash mining on the Harly hill: the Vienenburg potash works produced potash salt until 1930, when a mining accident brought extraction to an end. Vienenburg was first mentioned in records in 1306 and held town status from 1935 until the end of 2013.
